Don't get burned!
Well, here we are in the height of summer - finally! As such, Gail and I thought it a good time to remind us all of the dangers of over-exposure to the sun. Clearly we love the sun (we own a Shore home, and venture to the Caribbean frequently) but still precautions are a must!
We went to Consumer Reports for some hopefully unbiased info and here it is. This is not gospel, but intended to be helpful!!
First of all, we were not overly surprised to find out that of over the 60 lotions, sprays and sticks tested, 28 did not meet the SPF claims on their labels. What a shock!!
Consumer Reports warns that mineral-based sun screens containing only titanium oxide or zinc oxide (often referred to as "natural") are not the best options on the market. They often perform worse than chemical-based options. That being said, for those of us who do prefer a natural option, CR recommends a few. They are as follows:
- Cotz Plus SPF 58
- California Baby Super Sensitive SPF 30+
- Ocean Potion Protect & Nourish SPF 30 (oxybenzone-free but chemical based)
For the optimum protection, Consumer Reports suggests a chemical sun screen of 40 or higher SPF. These were their best rated lotions:
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk
- Pure Sun Defense SPF 50
- Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50
- Equate Sport Continuous Spray SPF 50
- No Ad Sport SPF 50
If you prefer a spray, here are their top 5
- Trader Joe’s SPF 50+ Spray
- Banana Boat SunComfort Continuous Spray SPF 50+
- Neutrogena Beach Defense Water + Sun Protection SPF 70
- Caribbean Breeze Continuous Tropical Mist SPF 70
- Equate Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30
Remember to reapply frequently and to wear a hat and a cover up. Shameless plug here! Deck Towels are light and breezy and make a fantastic and stylish cover-up. Many of our clients use them as a wrap or sarong. Do not rely on sun screen as your only protection!
Lastly, Consumer Reports notes that the FDA currently only requires manufacturers to test their own products; the FDA does not routinely conduct their own tests. Therefore, Caveat Emptor - or let the buyer beware!
We hope you find this information useful, but don't just take our word for it. Take the time to conduct your own research, and continue to enjoy the sun safely!
Take care,
Hank & Gail
